My Odeo Podcast

Mikel O.D. - mostpeoplearedjs's Podcast - mostpeoplearedjs's Podcast

I saw a documentary on No Wave music, called Kill Your Idols on the Sundance Channel not too long ago. It was all about the New York music scene, bands were on it like the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs and older Post Punk bands like 8-Eyed Spy. The music was both interesting and distracting. Well, New York is certainly not alone in the “No Wave” scene as it exists in my hometown of “near Detroit” as well. I shot this video of music and interviews from one night carefully orchestrated by (philosopher and) music writer Jeff Milo. It’s a encapsulated picture of a chaotic and fun night with 4 bands playing No Wave like no one’s else’s business.

Even though I've never mentioned it, I'll bet you can guess I'm a huge Devo fan - didn't they use to call us "spud boys"? I never got the chance to see Devo live, but, recently I came close. I saw local indie-synth band Silverghost perform as Devo at the Crofoot. They were great playing a set of older Devo material and doing their best impersonations. This MPAD vidcast is a little document of their performance and the what and why.My only regret is I didn't get to do the same with Wildcatting's performance as Talking Heads which was better than seeing Talking Heads - really!

One of the bonuses of doing a podcast like mine is I get to re-live moments from shows that I really enjoy and share them with you. I filmed this clip with Iglu and Hartley over a month ago and I forgot what a good time that night was.The video was taken at Phonotropic the Friday event at Vermors Room in Pontiac. Jarvis, the singer was just hilarious to talk with, at one point he had my flip video filming what is at the end of the clip. You don't get much of a vibe for the I&G sound from the video, so check out their full length "& then boom" which was quite the buzz in the UK.

This video episode features Will and Dan of the band "Zoos of Berlin," a local band with a distinctive sound that separates them from other Detroit acts. Zoos of Berlin play pop music that incorporates elements of jazz, progressive rock and vocal harmonies from Dan and Trevor. They released "Taxis," their first full length with 11 tracks. The interview and video was done at Phonotropic's 2nd Annual "Yessss!....." bash at the Crofoot.

Really short video episode with one of my favorite local DJs - DJ Downtime. I saw DJ Downtime warm up for DAT Politics a little over a month ago at the Pike Room. He had the crowd (well the 30 or so people there) moving to his energetic set of indie, electro, and dance. I pulled him aside to spend a few minutes on his DJ technique and equipment. With a show titled Most People Are DJs, I think it's only fitting that once in a while I talk to an actual DJ.

I have another video this week. To be honest, doing videos lately has been good for me for a number of reasons. First, the more I do video, the more I learn about how to make it more compelling. Second, I get more people downloading my video episodes, so, while I'm not going to stop doing MPAD audio it's nice to see healthy downloads from my video episodes. Third, I've devoted a lot of my time to my job search, doing the video episodes takes a bit less out of me in prep work. Finally, in making videos it's like I'm using a different part of my brain, I pull back on my opinions or ego and just focus on my video subject and how I can best represent them in my format.

This weeks MPAD vidcast features My Dear Disco, a band from AnnArbor that plays an eclectic type of dance music that has elements of world music, jazz, soul, etc. They put on a great live show and were a lot of fun to hang out with. If you enjoy the music, pick up their album on iTunes or eMusic.

I remember the first time I saw Deastro, as the warmup for Manna &Quail a couple years ago. Back then it was just Randolph Chabot his synths and drum kit. He had so much energy, I was blown away. I kept seeing Deastro after, even putting him on my own showcase of bands. The more I saw Deastro, the more I got to know Randolph, full of integrity and fierce ambition. A kid that at this point in life deserves to a have a big ego and flaunt his accomplishments, instead, Randolph just pushes harder, deflating his ego by moving his band to the front and working harder with show after show. Deastro's got a new album out, Moondagger, that displays Randolph's growth as a singer and how he's worked his band into his compositions. Check out this video with Randloph as we sat down on a fantastic June night where Deastro played at the Crofoot in front of over 1,000 of their friends and family.

I've went to a few shows lately and my flip camera has been tagging along. That annoying guy with the small camera he keeps holding in your way - that's me, sorry! But, you reap the benefits. I'm getting the vidcasts down to a "relative" science between mixing in audio, some comments and video. This week's video features 2 of my favorite Detroit bands, Champions of Breakfast and Otto Vector, that just happened to be playing on the same night. Val and Moses from CoB share stories about their touring. Then, Ginseng and Renee from OV tell me about what OV is up to (sort of). The video is 8 minutes and should keep you amused until next week when I have a superduper Deastro video coming!

I think this episode might just be my limit on how far I can push using my cheap (but awesome) flip camera and my even cheaper video production software. On this MPAD Video episode I'm featuring Marc Bianchi the voice and intellect behind Her Space Holiday. Marc was kind enough to sit down with me and let me video record the interview as well as the live clips which are from the HSH Pike Room show in May 25th, 2009. If you haven't checked out HSH's latest album, "X0X0 Panda, the New Kid Revival" you should give it a listen.

I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of making video episodes. This episode gives you a quick peek behind the curtain at my studio-work area, then a clip of the Pains of Being Pure at Heart using video that I took from my interview with them. The full interview will be featured in next week’s audio episode.

I'm still on vacation in Florida enjoying the weather and pool. My highlight of the week was visiting my brother Matt (see pic of us) who lives in Tampa. I read an entire novel, The Pledge by Rob Kean. It's one of the "hazing gone too far, weird fraternity rites" books. It's a page-turner, but a little too cliche for me. On this week's show I have another short video episode with Sex Ghost and Stereoluxxx. Both are local Detroit bands, comprised of two people that make oddly funky and moving music. I'll play a track by Stereoluxxx on an upcoming audio episode of MPAD.

I'm on vacation in Florida where it's sunny and warm. Well, it's actually raining today, but that gives me time to put up this video episode of MPAD. While I wasn't at SXSW, I did see my fair share of bands in the month of March. On this episode I give small sampling from some of those shows. The video is about 6 minutes long.

I've been playing around with this program called Comic Life - it's awesome. I'm able to put together these comic stories like the one above to go with my episodes. I put these pics in the video but becuase the video is small you may not be able to read them. On the video Val Hundereds from Champions of Breakfast tells a story from his youth and the background behind their crazy stage props.

Friday night, Champions of Breakfast (CoB's) played Luna. Let's talk about Luna. Luna is a mainstay in Royal Oak, MI. It is a haven for people like me, that are over 30 (even 40) but still love to shake it to some of today's better alternative music and older music from the days when we maybe looked better on the dance floor. Another tribe at Luna is the "graduated from college but I can't stop the partying" crowd with threadbare college t-shirts, beers in each hand and loud girls in tow. It's a fun place that doesn't discriminate, but those that go usually know what they are in for.
This was CoB's first time in Luna, let alone their first time playing Luna. When I arrived they expressed they were a bit nervous how the crowd would react to their performance. After all, if you haven't seen a CoB show, what they do on stage can come as quite a shock. CoB were also the first of 3 bands playing that night, which means the crowd is still a bit reserved, calm and operating on too many brain cells which inhibit the body from really moving. Rather than just take the stage and get their part over with, CoB took their chance and stormed the stage in a flash of frenetic, flashy, high-powered glee. The audience reaction was a thoughtful chin-rub that moved to shake of a head and then wide smiles as arms were thrown up and people moved to floor and joined the party. They got it.
CoB proceeded to keep the up the pace with their onstage antics of donning glitter cloaks, plastic armor, fake wooden instruments and off-beat cover choices of "We Built This City..." and "Games People Play." Their choice cover of "Sean Me An Angel" was a clever godsend gift to an audience that remembered the song from their youth. CoB's original songs about video games, Dungeons and Dragons and mythological beings of lore were readily accepted. After all, who hasn't hadn't had a D&D basement party?
CoB ended the show with "Pegasus Ride (R U Ready)" which asks the question "are you ready?" and received a hearty reply back. They were indeed ready. If you looked hard enough, CoB could be found after they show,as they left their sweaty, majestic clothing behind for indiscriminate attire and glasses. They moved quietly through the crowd with the occasional nod and handshake. CoB's members, Val Hundreds and Moses Jackson pack it up and go home quietly to plan their next ambush. CoB's next show is February 2nd and 3rd playing with the similarly spastic Gil Mantera's Party Dream.

It's getting close to 2009, so I thought I would take this chance to show you some of the new directions I'll be moving towards next year. Most People Are DJs has always been my outlet to promote media and music that doesn't have mainstream recognition, but I think deserves wider attention. The subjects I choose are usually people like myself, that take on the DIY ethic of creating, marketing and releasing their product all on their own. Charlie Slick, the subject of this "MPAD Presents" video is a perfect example of a DIY artist with a clear vision of his wacky, dynamic artistry and why he does what he does. It's a 7 minute video taking live clips from some of Charlie's shows and an interview I conducted with him in September. It's a bit rough, but most of it was done with a Flip video camera and a primitive video editing program, proving anybody can do this.

Charlie's next show is January 24 at the Trowbridge House of Coffee in Hamtramck

Here it is the final episode of BPM Media. I want to thank BPM, writer/artist Paul Sizer for doing so much work to put these episodes together. BPM Media, was an experiment of mine to promote independent art in a visual medium that could be easily viewed and informative at the same time. In 8 episodes, BPM Media provided bits of knowledge on both, Paul Sizer and his graphic novel, BPM. I hope you enjoyed the episodes, and, moreover, it prompts some of you to buy a book that may have never been on your radar screen.

Paul Sizer was the guest on Comic Geek Speak this week, they cover all kinds of territory both music and comics related.

For more information on BPM, visit Paul's BPM site he updates it regularly.

More Most People Are DJs artist videos are coming, but, later this week expect a packed MPAD episode with music, interviews and, of course, skewed intellect.

Dan and his wife, Katie, are very helpful and while he may not speak much on video, Dan's more than ready to recommend a comic or graphic novel. There are 3 more episodes of BPM left and only a few weeks before it is available at you local comic store. As always you can find out more about BPM Media by visiting the website.

I love electro! Electro of all types. Hyper Crush and Millionaires are electro music to party and dance to. What they may lack in depth they make up for in fun. This is Part 1 of a 2 part episode: a video episode and an audio episode. Part 1 is the video which has just small portions of the interview that will be part of the audio episode, plus a couple other surprises. The video gives a good view of 2 young, enthusiastic, awesome bands on tour.

Part 2: the audio episode will be available Tuesday (8/12/08) night!

I've been talking about doing 2 different episodes lately, a video and a "music in a foreign langauge" episode. I'm still working on that music in a foreign langauge episoide, but I did do a video episode for this week's MPAD. The video is 2 different clips, the first one is an interview of DJ Ice Cold Chrissy, with his music playing underneath it with video from his set and photos. It's still in what I like to call "guerilla" editing style. The second video is from Electric President and it's neat little video that looks like it took a while to assemble. The show's about 9 minutes show so you shouldn't get too bored.

Here's my first try at putting a D-I-Y MPAD video episode. I took the video and pics my friends took and created mini-videos from each band. For a novice I think I did "okay." The video's do capture the fun and excitement that took place last week at "Synth Shoegaze Surprize." If you like, tell your friends about it, and let me know so I can think about doing another.

Videos - (music from band, video from performances at Pike Room Jan 20, 2008 taken by Celeste with ARC Pontiac)
