My Odeo Podcast

Mikel O.D. - mostpeoplearedjs's Podcast - mostpeoplearedjs's Podcast

Next week, Halloween, one of my favorite holidays is coming. It's a holiday that lasts the whole month. It gives me an excuse to watch scary movies, sit around because it's raining outside and wear a silly costume.

I know I've slacked off on putting out podcasts, but I'm not going to lie and say that's going to change, I'm just saying when I get a chance to do an episode I'll do one. This episode I cover a few things like - talking about the Psychedelic Furs and the Happy Mondays, songs that make movies better than they really are and the upcoming Creepy Halloween Party at the Crofoot.

music:

Electric Tickle Machine - Blew It again

Echo and the Bunnymen - Life of 1,000 Crimes

Tim Rutili - Dreamless from The Lost

Neon Indian - Terminally Chill

mentions:

What's that they say? "It's better late than never" (which it was beginning to feel like). Welcome to the 200th episode of Most People Are DJs, I've been putting out these podcast episodes for over four years and I'm not sure how many other podcasts I can name that have made it to 200 episodes before fading away. With Most People Are DJs, as long as I keep to subjects I like and have something say about them, I don't see an end in sight. On this episode, I do what I usually do and play indie pop with bit of pop culture talk, but the songs are special because they are by bands I've met along the way of doing my show and they've become my friends.

music:

Deastro - Spritle

Any Day In June - Feathers

Champions of Breakfast - Nasy Bunz

Charlie Slick - Too Busy for Love

Eat Sugar - Pop Singer from "It's Not Our Responsibility"

The last time I spoke to Robert Wax was February of 2008. Seems like yesterday, but Wax has been up to a lot of new things and on MPAD#197 he spills the beans on his acting career that has taken off, and what his band, Crashing Cairo has been doing. Wax tells some great stories about some of the famous people he's bumped into at his acting gigs. So when Whip It plays in theaters in October keep a close eye for my friend Robert Wax.

The fun on this episode could include counting the made-up or mis-used words I make throughout the episode, I know there are at least three blantant errors. I was recording in my car and going talkng faster than my brain was processing, a failing of mine.On the positive, I cover a ton of topics here that should make an interesting listen for you.

After doing a few weeks of MPAD video episodes I decided I had a few things on my mind and an MPAD audio episode was due. This episode I catch you up on what I've been up to, a friend that I've made and a new track by an old band. I also talk about the documentary, Heckler, which explains what a Heckler is and how the definition has expanded to bolggers and critics. It's an interesting documentary with plenty of laughs.

I haven't been talking up the pop culture on the show for a while and I haven't just sat back and had a good conversation for even longer, on this episode ogf MPAD I get to do both. I sit down with my friend, J. Celestino from Any Day In June and talk about what TV shows we stuck out the season with, what music we're liking and movies. I also brought aong a few songs to share with you and J. Btw, "Basic J." is an early song by Gary Numan, that later became "Jo the Waiter".

I spent last weekend at Motor City Comic Con and had a great time buying some hardcover trades and talking to the artists. Being an independent comic artist at a comic convention is hard work that often goes unappreciated as people flock over to the B-movie stars or bargain bins, leaving out artists that pour their life into drawings and creating books that we relate to so much more than the superhero of the week. On this episode I interview three such comic artists that also have a connection to DJing. Enjoy the episode and check out the work the guys do because it's really great stuff.

So maybe I'm going overboard with this, but on this episode of MPAD, I have the full interview with the Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Two weeks ago I played a track from them, last week was the video, this week is the interview. What can I say? PoBPAH is one of my favorite bands of 2009. During the interview they also mentioned 2 bands that I play this episode that are new finds for me - Girls and the Manhattan Love Suicides.

The Motor City Comic Con is this weekend with lots of great guests and artists so be sure to come out! I'll be at MCCC on both Friday and Saturday.

Last week I got ahead of myself and put out MPAD#183, skipping right past MPAD#182. At a certain point I think numbering shows seems a bit unnecessary, but I’m ready for that yet. I cover a ton of stuff this episode so let’s get straight to the links. Remember, Saturday, May 2nd is free comic book day!

It's back to the audio editions for MPAD for a bit, on this episode I record part of the show using a new app for the iPod Touch called StudioApp by Krasidy. It's a fun app but definitely has some bugs to be worked out. The music I play is from 3 bands from the Detroit area and Maus Haus from San Francisco. There's an audio clip at the end from Derek Coward from the Comic Book Noise podcast about a past show of mine. I can always expect the real deal from Derek and he doesn't disappoint with this message.

I'm still planning on doing an MPAD episode this week, but I thought I would throw in a little surprise to the MPAD feed.
Welcome to the first episode of MiFilmCast! While I've been doing Most People Are DJs for over 3 years, starting this show felt like I have never done a podcast before. It's because the film scene is so new to me, which makes it just that much more exciting and nerve wracking! I hope you'll excuse the awkwardness as I'll get more comfortable as I go along. This episode features an interview with filmmaker, Dan McGowan, as talks about the Michigan Movie Networking Event at the Crofoot on Sat. April 4th, his movie, The Tower, and more.

On this episode I have an interview with Marlon from the electro-synth-pop band Velvet Code. You might remember them because I interviewed them back on MPAD#134. I also give you the opportunity to win the new CD from Velvet Code "Black Blue Blind" just be dropping me an email at mostpeoplearedjs@gmail.com and putting "Velvet Code" in the subject area. Of course if you want to digress and tell me what you think of the show etc. that would be more than welcome. I'm off to Florida next week but I'm going to try and squeeze in a video episode before I go.

On MPAD#178 I get back to an audio podcast with some great music and talk about job loss, a few podcasts and a terrific new album. As I mention on the podcast here is my review for 800Beloved's Bouquet.

800Beloved "Bouquet" Just the other day I was discussing with my friend how the instant access to the overflowing fountain of music has lead me to a lesser appreciation of it. When music today flows like water from a leaky tap, it's easier to leave the tap dripping. Why bother to even drink from it? It's better to just let it puddle on the floor and maybe some will manage to latch onto my pant cuff as I stumble through it on the way to take a leak.

Of course, just to prove I'm full of shit and like to pontificate fancy verbiage, an album like 800Beloved's Bouquet comes along and the water suddenly turns purple with a sugary, syrup taste coaxing me to lap it up like a man that hasn't had a good drink in ages. I could go through a breakdown on just how good each of Bouquet's 11 tracks are with moments that echo New Order with a shoegaze twist, but that would just an exercise in tedium as the whole album is glorious in it's decadent, rich darkness. It was a great Friday night at the Pike Room for MPAD Presents Neat Neat Neat. A good crowd turned out, the bands played excellent sets and the Sucker DJs played the hits. People were dancing, smiling and at least one person got embarrassingly drunk. The best part is I actually got some decent recordings from the show to share with you. If you were there, you can relive the night and if you weren't, you can hear what you missed. Next week I have video coming!

I'm also reviewing "Years of Refusal" the latest Morrissey CD and Dollhouse the new TV show from Joss Whedon.

I had my reservations about putting this episode out, it's not one of my best. But, I'll leave you to be the judge of it. Most of the crappiness lies in that I wasn't prepared for my interview with Gil Mantera's Party Dream. That's not to say I didn't know who GMPD was, I did, I just didn't ever feel relaxed asking them questions. I've been much less prepared for other interviews and had a better go at it. GMPD were nice enough guys, I just an awkward feeling with them I couldn't quite overcome. I also had a lot of problems getting a good recording. I use a Zoom H2 which usually works great, provided people speak loud enough to be picked up by the microphone. Quiet mumbling just doesn't make for a great recording.

While I may not be happy with the interview, the music is great. I play 2 tracks by GMDB and 1 track by Love Meets Lust. LML is headlining the show I am promoting Nov. 27th, so if you like what you hear come check it out.

Believe it or not this is take 3 on my show notes/blog for this episode! My first take on show notes didn't even have anything to do with the episode but more on that ridiculous pic of me and one of the members of Millionaires. (Ridiculous refers to the me part of the pic, Allison from Millionaires is fantastic).

On take one I had this brilliant, witty blog written that even made a point. Unfortunately, I got this problem with my blog editor that if I do a search on the same page I'm doing the blog on, I lose any text I put in for my blog. It's complicated, frustrating and only an idiot like me makes the mistake twice on the same day!

I'll be honest, for me, intellectual brilliance like I had written earlier today is few and far between and there's never a hope that I'm able to recapture it. So, all I can do is move on and tell you to enjoy the episode. It has an interview, a live review and shimmering, sparkly, electro-indie pop.

On MPAD#172 I review 2 documentaries I saw recently, Religulous and Kill Your Idols. Putting the episode together I discovered (as is usually the case) there was stuff I meant to mention but forgot. I don't want to let that stuff go to waste, so I'm going to slip it in this blog space and if I remember I'll mention it on my next episode. I played a clip from Lydia Lunch and she mentions loving the Dead Boys and how she got her name "Lydia Lunch." Well, hearing about her name, got me thinking about the song "I Need Lunch" by the Dead Boys. Now I know what Stiv Bators meant when he said he didn't need a cook but he still wanted lunch. That song is even meaner and dirtier than I originally thought. For the record, "Young, Loud and Snotty" is better than "Never Mind the Bullocks..." and I don't really care for much by Lydia Lunch but "Death Valley 69" is brilliant.

It's been too long since I've done a proper episode of MPAD. I could list a hundred reasons for the delay, but I'd rather spend the energy moving forward. This is my 2008 recap episode where I mention some of the things I dug in 2008 and what I'm looking forward to in 2009. I talk about TV, music and more. I'm sure I mention more than what is below in the show notes so make sure you listen close.

I know, I know, I did a lot of horror stuff back in October when it seemed relevant. Yet, here I am in December with an episode centered around Vampires. What can I say? I dig Vampires! With the movie Twilight opening (which you will not be getting a review from me on), the hit TV show True Blood (which I do review) and more, Vampires are back again with a vengeance. My question is, did they really ever go away? Unlike other horror icons, with their lust for (taking) life and zeal for evil doings, the Vampire continues to hold our interest.

It took me a little longer than usual to crank this one out. I'm not sure why. Mostly it was a matter of finding the time to sit in front of the mic and record. Somewhere along the way I think I've lost my aging compass when it comes to music. Friends my age will tell me they don't like new bands because they can no longer relate to them and it isn't relevant to the life they currently lead. For me, music is as much about escapism as it is about wondering weather carries any relevance. I lead a mundane life. I like it that way, but I don't really need a band to remind me of it. What I need is a band that recaptures my youthful spirit by playing music that makes me what to shake off the lethargy that creeps in and settles on me because I've been thinking too much about paying dues and bills. Bands like the Medic Droid and Hyper Crush do that for me.

On this episode I play six tracks, I talk to the bands Medic Droid and Hyper Crush, and review the live show. Have a good Thanksgiving, and if you can come out the Crofoot on Nov.29th for Christmas On Mars!

Boy Crisis - Dressed to Digress (reminds me a bit of Soft Cell)

the Medic Droid - Fer Sure (remix), It's about Love (Get their ep on iTunes!)

Interview with Chris and Hector of Medic Doid

HyperCrush - The Arcade (edit), Sex And Drugs (I like the line about Soda Pop)

Interview with Hypercrush

Chronic Future - Rocket Science

I think today was the first snow to fall today for this time of year. Gray skies, snow, falling temperatures, just the stuff to usually bring a person today. But, today I'm all smiles and that's what this episode is all about. After some dark days, I'm turning over a new leaf and starting to look forward to tomorrow again. I'm playing some fun mix stuff and showgazesque tracks while I spiel on about PodCamp, MI and my iTouch.

MPAD#165 is a special Halloween show. I love Halloween, because it gives me an excuse to dive deep into the horror and dark stuff I have an interest in and it's okay, because I'm just in the spirit of the holiday. With all the economy doom and gloom, horror is actually a welcome escape.

After taking a week off of MPAD, I'm back with a vengance! On this episode I interview my favorite lyricist in music today, David Gedge of the Wedding Present. TWP recently played live in my area and I was fortunate enough to get a few minutes of David's time to answer a few questions. He's quite amusing and very accommodating. If you're a fan of TWP and you don't have El Rey, yet, you should pick it up, it's another great release. Also, on the episode I play more jangle pop, feature spooky soundtrack band Goblin and more.

Interview:

David Gedge of the Wedding Present and Cinerama

Music:

The Wedding Present - Gazebo (John Peel version)

The Wedding Present - Spiderman On Hollywood

Dirty On Purpose - Light Pollution

Army/Navy - My Thin Sides

the Von Bondies - Pale Bride

With Wall Street falling apart at the seams, the economy not getting any better and my wallet taking a beating, I need to inject some humor in my life. The songs on this week's show should put a few smiles on your face, they are a little silly, but I wouldn't call them "novelty" songs.

I can see the leaves beginning to turn color and the TV is getting turned on a bit more frequently. Fall is coming and with it comes new TV, new music and football. On MPAD#159 I'm playing some new music from a couple of folks that have risen back from the ashes of yesterday, Juliana Hatfield and Wayne Hussey. There's also local band the Silent Years. I saw them play last night and I have to say seeing them live is an almost spiritual event. In the middle are a couple of electro-pop/dance tracks that are very infectious. There's TV talk as I cover what I'm watching this fall, by the way, I watched 90210 last night and believe it or not, it's good! Reminds me of the old 90210 with a fresh spin. I should have mentioned that I'm watching the Shield and the first episode of it's last season was pretty great.

A couple friends of mine that are encyclopedic when it comes to music and myself have decided to start a DJ Crew called Sucker DJs. The unspoken mission of Sucker DJs will be to dispel the myth that all DJs have that "cooler than thou, untouchable" attitude. We're approachable, down to earth guys, playing music that strays away from tedium and repetition. We add flavor to the typical DJ set and we mean that literally.

Along with Jeff Milo, Tom Matich, and myself, as Sucker DJs we'll be playing indie, electro, soul, hip hop, etc. that will move your feet, make you grin and think things that are probably best left unsaid. We'll be playing as part of Encore, a big bash at the Crofoot on Friday, Aug. 29th. Yeah, its approaching fast...

In celebration of the Pontiac's Arts Beats and Eats Festival I'm playing local bands that will be performing there or nearby soon. These are local artists that need to be heard nationally.

This year's NME was held in Las Vegas which came with both good and bad things. The good things were there was tons to do, people to watch and maybe a chance to win some money. The bad was too many distractions, hard to focus on NME and easy to lose money. I was lucky to have share a room with two great Podcasters, Charles from Insomnia Radio SoCal and Steve from Geek Cred (check their shows out!) With those two, I always had a fun time and met lots of people they knew. On this episode, Charles and I did some poolside recording of our perceptions on the show. There's also some great music Charles' recommended and a couple of other surprises. A slide show of my pics will be up in a couple days so check back!

Last night I got to check out the Art Fag DJ collective at Vernor's Room which was cool, but that isn't the point. I was told by friends that I should see the Hard Lessons, but all I heard was comparisons to the White Stripes who I am just not much of a fan for. But, I made my way over to see the Hard Lessons and they were BRILLIANT! Completely at the top of their game, rocking out like a national headliner and having friends from other bands join them on stage. They made me a believer and you'll hear them on MPAD real soon.

As for this week's episode, I split up the talk from the music. I have a 15 minute mix at the beginning that includes a demo from one of my favorite local bands, the Nice Device, then, the mix gets funky and trippy (where's that sample from?) leading to something from Girl Talk's latest (which you can download online). The talk covers the latest albums I've listened to, a new technology toy and some crazy song that's been driving me crazy! Enjoy.

I think this is my first "author" interview episode. John Sellers is the author of "Perfect From Now On: How Indie Music Saved My Life" and has also contributed articles to Spin, GQ, The New York Times and more. He's an obsessive music fan that I could spend countless hours at a bar arguing over which Smiths song is best or which bands should really reunite. Our conversation is an hour and includes 2 tracks and underscored by some of the best music from the 80's, 90's and even a few from today.

So about three years ago I put out my first MPAD episode. I looked at the show as my way of spreading what I deem as good, under appreciated music and other artistic endeavors to an audience larger than the few friends I have been talking and playing this stuff to for years. Doing anything for 3 years on a consistent basis is significant. It's even more significant when you can point to results and events that make the work worthwhile. I can point to friends that I've made, the listeners that I have and events that have made the last 3 years special enough to keep doing this crazy new media show. This week's episode is a typical show with a few new bands I've come across with great songs and some banter about the event I DJ'd (well, sort of) over the weekend.

I hope everyone is having a great 4th of July weekend! As I sit here with a sunburn on my face of all places, I'm trying to hide from the sun. In celebration of Indendence Day, I am interviewing an independent artist that pushes the limits of life and music, Dan Diamond. His songs such as Titty Dancer and Bad Habits uncover the seedy lifestyle we normally watch and cheer on from the bleacher seats. Always enjoying the view but never sure if we'd want trade places.

Dan Diamond clips from "She's A Dancer" "Bad Habits" "Club Therapy" (w/Peace Division) and "Just Like Everybody"

I didn't say it on the episode so let me put it here: Happy Father's Day! Rather than play music and do the usual MPAD episode, on this episode I talk with Lee Bushman, the Marketing Director at Iron Core Entertainment (ICE), a film company that is currently working on the Sci-Fi webvideo series "Terra". "Terra" is an ambitious, science fiction show that takes place in the not too distant future. I'd tell you more but I'd rather you listen to the episode and hear it from Lee. ICE are looking for extras and people that like to have a good time, if you're interested check this event out. If you create music ICE are also looking for music to contribute to their show. Underneath the interview the music playing is provided by Mighty Whitey and Aleph-1, a prog-syth band from Ann Arbor.

Movement 2008 is also known as the Annual Detroit Tech Techfest. A weekend of cutting edge electronic music, DJing and fun. I went to the show on Sunday, May 25 and had an amazing time. I had my flip video recorder with me and took some video. This episode has some of the better footage. It was a crazy day that was packed with people, there was dancing, great music, and friendly faces. You could say I was "moved by movement!" See you there in 2009.

Welcome to June, despite the cost of gas, I think this is going to be a great summer, lots of good shows, a couple festivals and sun. Thanks to the podcast I'm getting involved with things I've always wanted to do - like DJ a show and be part of the process of making a record. There's even more than that, but I don't want to speak too soon, so you'll learn more about that on upcoming MPAD episodes. On this episode, the music is a lighter than last week, with a bit of power pop thrown in. The comic supplied for this page is from Dave LaPlante's Joe Pop, check it out.

This weekend in Detroit is Motor City Comic Con and I've been getting back into the world of comics, largely through great indie efforts like American Born Chinese. Part of the purpose of Most People Are DJs, besides playing great indie music, is to showcase people that are using their talent to produce (mostly)independent works of art, whether it's music. films, novels or comics that I think deserve more exposure. On this episode, I have an interview with Fred Chao, the writer and artist for "Johnny Hiro - Half Asian All Hero", a great comic that combines "slice of life" commentary with Japanese history and non-stop action. There are 3 issues out and Fred's working on more. For a preview of "Johnny Hiro" go here!

This episode features two interviews from a couple of bands I've played recently and I think really deserve your attention. First up, from Brooklyn, NY, Bell Hollow, 4 guys and a girl that combine to make some beautifully textured rock music that calls back on some of the great 80's bands like the Chameleons and the Sound. Second, I interview PlayRadioPlay, from Texas, who is really just one guy that makes awesome synth-pop with an "emo-like" edge to it. I start things off with a new track by NIN that is available for free and is an awesome listen.

I'll get back to some interviews soon but this episode is me playing music that keeps me smiling. A little less synth, a lot more guitar jangle on this one. I listened to a lot of podcasts this week so I mention 2 that rose above the others and I tell you about a rock-n-roll comic that I'm currently reading. By the way (did you notice I spelled that out - I am not a lazy blogger!), while I may not have a beard, I am a little scruffy this morning. Maybe I should give that "Don Johnson" look a spin.

If you're not laughing at this cover, show it to your parents, they'll find it hysterical! I crack up everytime I look at it. Under the Radar Magazine just keeps getting better.

I came up with three words to describe Most People Are DJs: synth, crackle, pop! I'm incorporating this into a new flyer design that will attempt tp explain Most People Are DJs to the totally uninitiated. On this episode I play 8 awesome tracks and profile 2 terrific artists, M83 and Helio Sequence. There a ton of topics I drop on this episiode so after listening your head may be spinning. If that's the case I have a suggestion, rinse and repeat!

music:

Bubblegun If the martian land can we do interviews? (mp3) Buy at iTunes Music Store

Idiots! - Spring Is Here! M83 - Graveyard Girl (CD available April 14)

The Diggs - Everyone's Starting over (Cassettes Won't Listen Remix)

I am back in town and it looks like SPRING IS HERE (I think I'll play that track on next week's show). I mentioned last week that I would play music on this week's show that I discovered in Florida. For the most part that is true, it just happens I listened to a lot of electro-pop with female vocals so that's what you get this week. I've been thinking a lot about social networking sites lately so I give you my 2 cents worth on that and I found these websites that you can make your own online mix tapes - pretty cool! Enjoy the show.

music -

Sissy Wish - Dwts (Do What they Say)

The Mania - The Damage (Wow remix) I really botched this up on the show and called the band "the Damage" and the song "Wow" - sorry!

Scanners - Raw (from PME)

Robots In Disguise We're In The Music Biz (mp3) Buy at iTunes Music Store

Sex Ghost - Meet Me In The Bathroom

Men - Make It Reverse

Air Bureau Club - Frequency

I put this show up a little early because I'm on the long road home on Sunday and Monday. On this episode I make up for the talking I excluded last week by having commentaries on who I'm supporting for President, the car brand Scion and 3 music podcasts I recommend. For music, I play some recent music from 2 legendary bands (in my book) The Wedding Present and Bauhaus. I also play some indie pop and hip hop.

There is so much that went on last week, here's a few highlights:

I went to Phonotropic on Friday and saw hip hop artist SignOne he was incredible with humor and intelligence.

The podcast the Tripwire is the podcast (and blog) to hear what is some of the best music coming out today.

I'm seeing the band Islands tonight, should be a good show.

Rob and I recorded a new episode of Supernot if you want to hear some takes on current entertainment/pop culture.

It's time for another MPAD video edition! This one features 2 songs that I recorded at live shows by Champions of Breakfast and Charlie Slick. It's amazing how much work even putting together a 10 minute primitive, DIY video is, but it's fun and I hope you like the "not-so"hidden messages!

bands:

Champions of Breakfast "Unicorn Bible" live from the Elbow Room

Charlie Slick "My Name Is" live from Luna

Both bands are performing at this week's Metro Times Blowout!

This week's episode features an interview of Jesse Thorn of the podcast/radio show The Sound of Young America. The Sound of Young America is one of my favorite podcasts, each week Jesse interviews bands, actors, writers, etc. that make my life more interesting. Jesse's interviews are always incisive and full of fun. This episode I put him on the other side of the mic and try to get similar results. I also play music that I think Jesse will dig, but, I'm not sure how successful that turned out.

music:

I mentioned the weather last week so I may as well update you, today it's freezing rain and slick conditions. I almost slipped getting my paper this morning! I went to shows both Friday and Saturday night, so today I'm truly calling it a day of rest. I noticed that for the past couple of weeks I got away from playing the quirky, synth driven stuff I've identified MPAD with, so this week it's back with a vengeance. I'm also pulling out a couple of surprises.

Besides what on episode, here's what else is going on:

800Beloved warmed up for A Place to Bury Strangers and played a brillinat set, they may have an electronic ep up this week so stay on their path.

If you like horror then you have to listen to Dread Media, a great horror podcast that is similar to Sci-Fi Dig but for fans of horror. I had an email of mine read on a previous episode.

A Knight Rider for 2008 is on tonight and the Spice Girls sold out the Palace. We've retread so much from the recent past that we're really digging the bottom of the barrel.

So let's get intro this week's episode -

music:

Velvet Code - Trust Fund Girl

YACHT See A Penny (Pick It Up) (mp3) iTunes Music Store

A Place To Bury Strangers - To Fix the Gash In Your Head

The Epochs Opposite Sides (go to their MySpace Blog for the remix ep)

DeviantUK - We Have A Technical (this was also covered by the Rentals)

Johnny Hollow - Nova Heart

The wind is kicking hard today and it's about 10 below zero F when you factor that in. but, I'm going to keep warm today by having the fireplace on and playing some good music. Judging by the music alone, this is probably one of my best episodes. Four of tracks come from bands that are playing a show on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Crofoot. The slide show above is from a couple of recent shows that I've attended. I even got to announce Crashing Cairo (thanks Wax!) on stage at one of the shows.

Before I get into the show notes, here's a couple of things I meant to mention but left out:

Mojo did a 3 hour radio show on and with Gary Numan, it was a radio stream, but if you search hard enough you can find an MP3 file of it (or you can email me).

I've been reading the Captain America Omnibus for the past couple of weeks and I have to say this may be the best comic storyline I've ever read. The pacing, the characters, plots and subplots are so well told that even though I know what lies ahead, reading it unfold, I never get the sense this was done as sensationalism (see One More Day).

Lost is finally back on and I can't say I'm immediately hooked, but, maybe a listen to the Ekobase podast will help.

800Beloved is playing the Magic Stick on Friday with A Place to Bury Strangers, if you missed them at the MPAD Showcase here's your chance to see their incredible live show. I'll probably cover this on next week's show.

On with the notes from the show:

music:

The Dead Bodies "Total Destruction"

Us vs. Her "In My Pocket"

Bob Mould "The Silence Between Us" for PMN

Wild Sweet Orange "Wrestle With God"

Chase Pagan "Walzting In the Sky"

The Great Fiction "Paleego"

Manna and Quail "Honestly"

Background music:

Jon Kennedy 110% Proof (mp3) Demons (mp3)Buy at eMusic

mentions:

It was a chilly, snowy night last week when I tracked out to to see Maritime at the Pike Room in Pontiac. I'll be honest and say the warm up bands, one who I never got the name of and the One AM Radio were not very exciting. However, when Maritime took the stage the played a blistering set of of songs, with many of the highlights from their latest album, "Heresy and the Hotel Choir." The guitar interplay between Davey and Dan was incredible, the songs live have a bit more of an edge that really got the crowd going. I interviewed Davey and Dan (Dider) from Maritime before the show, this episode features the interview, music from Maritime and more.

Greg Gillis is the head behind the music experience known as Girl Talk. Girl Talk takes bit of hip hop, rap, funk, alternative, sappy 70's music and more to create a style that is a step beyond mix tapes, DJing and mashups. I caught up with GT after his recent tour and his show at the Eagle Theater in Pontiac, which was absolutely nuts! We talk about the formation of Girl Talk, the live show and how he creates a Girl Talk Track. Of all the interviews I've done lately I think this is my best one yet.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break. Relaxing with family and enjoying good food, there are few things better in life. With that in mind I decided it was appropriate to have a member of my family on MAPD. My brother-in-law, Dave, musician, businessman and family man sat down with me this epsiode to talk about his favorite concert memory and disaster stories when he was playing in a band. The music is new wave, synthpop at its best.

Over the last couple of months I've seen a lot of shows and spoken with a lot of bands. This week I got a chance to see and speak with one of my favorite bands, the Hold Steady. It's always a tricky things interviewing a band on the night they play, there's noise, the bands could be distracted with playing that night (as they should) and it's a game of wait and see if the band has time to be interviewed. Luckily, Tad Kubler and Craig Finn from the Hold Steady were great guys to welcome me give me a few minutes of their time. On this episode I play the interviews along with some special music from the Hold Steady, a track from Art Brut who is also played that night. I also play the Mobius band and Mason Proper who play mater this week in Pontiac.

music -

The Hold Steady - "Chips Ahoy" "Teenage Liberation" "Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night" (Live) "Killer Parties" Live

I missed the Henry Rollins spoken word show, but my firend, Aaron for Weeklk Anime Review filled me in on what I missed. So I'm here at the PME at a bar in the Doubletree having a great time. And like magic I also have a new MPAD episode with outstanding music! James Celestino from Any Day In June and his new Matapop.tv show fills in and puts a few tracks together with his own take on this season's TV offerings. If you dug this show, give James some recognition by dropping him a line.

artists:

Jupiter One - Countdown
Roenik - I don't want to be here at all
epo-555 - Hyperschlieb

On Sept. 7, I went to the openiong of the Pike Room in Pontiac and saw 3 great bands: the Start, the Static Age and Otto Vector. The great thing about podcasts is I get to share my experience with you - in this episode you get short, even a little incoherent interviews, new music from each band and even a video I took. If you like what you hear be sure let the bands know by contacting the, buying their music or seeing them live.

music and interviews:

Otto Vector - "Never Forget"

the Static Age - "Cherry Red" and "Blank Screens" from Blank Screens

the Start - "Master Plan" from Ciao Baby

bonus:

It's another special episode of MPAD as I welcome back, Bazooka Joe, of the Solipsistic Nation Podcast. I've been wanting to do another show with electronic music at it's heart, and who better to help me with that than Bazooka Joe, an expert on the subject - you can tell just by listening to any of his Solpsistic Nation Podcasts. We span the electronic genres on this show starting with synthy dance music, getting dubby then dark, psychedelic and twisted. It's a bonus length show that fit's perfectly on a CD - so burn away!

tracks (thanks again Joe):

"Technopluck!" (mp3)

from "Pug Pug Pug" by Peanut Butter Disco (Hiswitch Records) Buy at eMusic More On This Album

Spray - Love's Been Particularly Cruel To Me

"Surf's Up" (mp3)

"Ghost Summer" (mp3)

from "Compressor" by Terminal Sound System (Extreme) Buy at eMusic

Ectomorph - "the Haunting" (Adult mix)

Robert Rich -Live at Fort Mason

There a whole lot of other electronic music playing underneath us talking that I picked randomly as I put the show together.

(Despite what I say at the beginning, this is episode #52)!

Happy Independence Holiday! For us Michiganders, that means 4 -5 days of boating, BBQing and fireworks. I'm usually tired of all it by the 2nd day. Enjoy the the show, featuring a bunch of "the" titled bands and reviws of the latest release by the Wedding Present and Q magazine.

          music-

          The Magnificents: "Kids Now"

The Wedding Present : "I'm From Further North Than You" (Klee remix)

          The Violet Burning: "Rewind"

          The Slats: Another Physical Reaction

          reviews-

Q Magazine - the June Issue, run out to your local bookstore to get this issue, because it'll be gone soon

The Wedding Present - Searching For Paradise

          media clip-

Stick around for the very, very end of the show for a special bonus song!

On the way home from work I picked up Morrissey's "Ringleader of the Tormentors". I opted not to get the expanded package which included a DVD video but not much else. I also picked up the CD single for "You Have Killed Me". This is worth getting for their cover of the New York Dolls' "Human Being", plus 2 songs not on the CD.

And, I play a media clip from the vidcast of the new expanded Sin City DVD.
