Way back on MPAD#36 I did a show dedicated to Stan Ridgway. Well just a couple of days ago Stan was in town with his band for the 25 Anniversary of Wall of Voodoo's "Call of the West." On this episode I'm paying homage to Stan again by playing some more of his music and covering his career.

music (all Stan Ridgway)

Valerie Is Sleeping

Drive She Said

I'm sure I'll get some flack for this, but Starship Troopers is one of my favorite movies of all time. Seriously. I love the propaganda look and feel for the film. It reminds me of Frank Miller's "Dark Knight Returns," it's a great use of irony.  Some people don't get this, but, watching this move after 9-1-1 is interesting. And, thinking back to the start of the Iraq war, a lot of scary parallels between the world of S.T. and ours can be made.
S.T. is set in a very fascist world, where serving for the military is the highest of honors.
The teens in this movie are portrayed as pretty, naive and vacuous. They're gung-ho about going into space and killing bugs, until they realize they're like lambs being sent in for the slaughter. Even after seeing several of their own gruesomely taken down they continue their gusto for war.
Director, Paul Verhoven, maybe stays too close to the irony, in that many people fail to see he is intentionally glorifying the fascism and war, so we can see beyond the surface. Beyond the surface is a mindless bunch of kids and a world that is going get it's shit kicked in.

It's another special episode of MPAD as I welcome back, Bazooka Joe, of the Solipsistic Nation Podcast. I've been wanting to do another show with electronic music at it's heart, and who better to help me with that than Bazooka Joe, an expert on the subject - you can tell just by listening to any of his Solpsistic Nation Podcasts. We span the electronic genres on this show starting with synthy dance music, getting dubby then dark, psychedelic and twisted. It's a bonus length show that fit's perfectly on a CD - so burn away!

tracks (thanks again Joe):

"Technopluck!" (mp3)

from "Pug Pug Pug" by Peanut Butter Disco (Hiswitch Records) Buy at eMusic More On This Album

Spray - Love's Been Particularly Cruel To Me

"Surf's Up" (mp3)

from "From Brooklyn To SF" by Kush Arora (Kush Arora) More On This Album

"Ghost Summer" (mp3)

from "Compressor" by Terminal Sound System (Extreme) Buy at eMusic

Ectomorph - "the Haunting" (Adult mix)

Robert Rich -Live at Fort Mason

There a whole lot of other electronic music playing underneath us talking that I picked randomly as I put the show together.
